I’m Getting Older -or- How I spent my 1 Year Anniversary and 27th Birthday

I’m turning 27 on Sunday. Yes, I’m getting older and I’m aware of that after today. My Father-in-law pointed that out in a conversation he had with my wife. It went something like this:

Wife: “Dad, Jon’s knee is hurting. I’m pretty sure it’s in his (enter fancy doctor term here) tendon. Anything he can do for it?”
Father-In-Law: “hahahahahaha. He’s getting old. Tell him to take some tylenol and get used to getting old.”

See, I’ve been walking around the Disney World parks this past week: Magic Kingdom, MGM Studios, and Animal Kingdom. I’ve “never” been to Disney World. When I say “never” I mean I was like two so I don’t remember it. Also, I probably couldn’t ride any thing fun. So this week, I consider it my first Disney World Aware Trip. It’s been amazing. We’re celebrating our first Anniversary and my birthday. I have a pin that I wear and it proves it’s my birthday. All the Disney Cast Members (employees) all wish me happy birthday and I feel affirmed in my getting older.

Here are some things I can say about my trip to Disney World thus far:

1. After riding Space Mountain for the first time, I was literally disappointed that I would never actually go to space. Yes, that was the geek in me. Let’s hope that Space Tourism takes off and gets cheaper. Thanks Battlestar Galactica!!!
2. Tower of Terror is the scariest and best ride I’ve ever been on. Seriously. Maybe it’s the presentation or maybe it’s the multiple and random drops, but I can say without a shadow of a doubt I’m almost 27 and still afraid of rides like that. Thanks Free Fall!!!
3. Expedition Everest is the new Space Mountain. Don’t get me wrong, Space Mountain will always have a special place in my geeky heart, but Disney really came up with a classic roller coaster when they built Expedition Everest. It’s truly a “not to be missed” ride when visiting Disney World. We rode it three times. Thanks Nepal!!!
4. I know it’s cool to hate big business but there’s something about the surface story of Walt Disney and actually being in the Magic Kingdom that makes me want to be more creative and really reach for the stars. Thanks Mickey Mouse and the Fantasmic Spectacular!!!
5. Details are not overlooked at Disney World. Thanks Anal-Retentive personalities!!!

So, as I blog with ice on my right knee and wishing upon a star, I’m really thankful that I’ve never really grown up.

Hope all is well on your side of the screen - jb

p.s. My wife totally got me a Nintendo DS for my birthday. Any suggestions for games?

    Some thoughts.

I refuse to acknowledge that 27 is old. That’s only 18 months more than me, and I’m pretty sure I’m not even close to getting old. Unless some sort of weird acceleration happens between now and then.

How about Brain Age? It’s supposed to make your brain “younger” which seems to fit well with this post. Daily puzzles/training stuff. It’s pretty fun and well worth the $20.

And I’m sure I don’t have to say this, but Mario Kart is a blast.

i’d get zelda. you can never go wrong with that guy.

i went to universal studios a few years ago, but i really want to do the whole disney thing again. i did that at 7 years old. i secretly let a little weewee out on space mountain, but it wasn’t enough to stop the ride, and luckily i had on dark pants.

I used to work at Disney in the Parades. It was the best job ever! I got to play all day.

Dude, great post. I say look 27 in the eyes and then grab it’s balls and then say something really kickass like, “27, you’re gonna wish you never happened to me when I’m through with you this year.”

that would be really cinematic. And well, I like cinemas.
